Bowden Investment Group

What is the Bowden Investment Group?

In January 2000, a real-money investment portfolio was established in honor of Dr. Elbert Bowden and is managed by students at Appalachian State University. The Bowden Investment Fund is owned by the Finance, Banking & Insurance (FBI) Department and Appalachian State University. The Group consists of students participating in a unique real-world educational experience to learn about analyzing investment opporturnities and managing a real investment portfolio. The portfolio has been provided by donations from students, faculty and supporters of ASU.

In addition, another long-term goal of the program is to provide a source of supplemental funding for various activities and needs of both students and faculty within the FBI Department.

How does it operate?

Students involved in managing the Bowden Fund enroll in a series of classes, Investment Management I and II (FIN 4620 and 4622), for which they receive 6 credit hours. Students must attend for two consecutive semesters beginning Fall semester of each year.

A variety of security analysis and investment management topics are covered in the class, but the primary focus is on the analysis of equity securities and the specific management of the Bowden portfolio. Students conduct detailed research and prepare an investment analysis report for any security that is being conidered for purchase or sale. Their analysis and recommendation is presented to the Bowden Investment Group (the class) and the students vote on investment decisions.

Outlook

In order to maximize the benefit of this unique and valuable experience, the Bowden Fund needs to continue to grow in size. As of mid-2004, the fund value is approximately $70,000. A significant fund raising effort continue with a goal of increasing the size of the fund to at least $100.000.
